Bristol, UK, Jan 2009: EigenForge announces the launch of an entirely managed HPC service today for the High Performance Computing (HPC), or Supercomputing, market. EigenForge will procure, host and manage clients' HPC requirements in one of our data centres.

In doing so clients will avoid delays (often significant time delays), enjoy the benefit of enterprise capability and best-of-breed systems, and reduce costs in several ways:

• Removes lengthy and separate data centre hurdles, finding resources for additional infrastructure or in the worst case having to build new data centre space.
• avoid lengthy consultation processes with individual vendors and resellers
• avoid increasing staff head-count or training staff
• convert Capital Expense to Operational Expense
• improve cash-flow by spreading service payments

Ensuring that the HPC factors of production are in place takes considerable effort and time. EigenForge accelerates the time to results by already having the HPC factors of production in place at our data centres. Also, removing the data centre issue enables clients to scale their systems and operations over long periods of time without having to worry about the scalable capability of their own data centre, i.e. it empowers clients with greater capacity and change management effectiveness.

It is not unusual for organisations to take in excess of a year (and sometimes two years) in procuring a HPC facility", says EigenForge founder and Principal Dr Jason Hogan-O'Neill. "Organisations who are procuring HPC systems, especially for the first time, often underestimate the amount of time and effort required; not just in maintaining high uptime on the system, but on actually procuring the system, creating the data centre infrastructure for it and allowing for future scalability".

Through consultation and business workflow review EigenForge helps clients assess their HPC requirements. Once this stage is complete EigenForge will undertake the procurement, installation and post-installation management of the service to a set of pre-agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA) with the client.

Additionally, whereas organisations may keep abreast of technical advances over the lifetime of a machine, the time to undertake a deeper market analysis and how vendor offers typically fit together usually only becomes available in a relatively brief period of time before the next procurement phase. In contrast EigenForge must constantly monitor and assess the entire spectrum of the market at far greater frequency than an individual client would be able to on their own.

Downtime on HPC systems causes considerable loss of production coupled with rapid depreciation on an asset where clients procure and manage the systems and facilities for themselves. By availing of such a specialist HPC service clients can also look forward to enhanced levels of uptime on the facility. Clients will also be able to convert Capital Expenditure to Operational Expense Payments are also extended over a period of time instead of a singular large cash payment at the outset.
