  Data Centre Migrations and Shutdown

Goal

Act as the Senior Project Manager on migrating infrastructure and services from two German data centres to a single UK data centre.

Background

Our client had bought another company, and accrued an additional two data centres. The client needed to reduce duplication and costs and migrate the functions of both German data centres to the UK. The project had already been initiated by a major European Services company but their contract was due to expire before completion.

  • both German data centres were 'live' and serving production applications to millions of users.
  • if notice could not be served to the data centre provider the client would incur another year of hosting charges.
Hence the client urgently needed a senior project manager to come onboard, quickly ascertain remaining tasks and ensure it met the deadline.

Execution

There were 3 major aspects to check in the first instance:

  1. hardware inventory. Identify the role of each piece of hardware
  2. application inventory, plus the owners/teams of each application
  3. network traffic into and out of the data centre
and subsequently cross-checking all 3 aspects. These were incomplete from the previous project owner, and in one case a significant previously unknown function arose: the need to migrate a Content Delivery Network (CDN).

We pulled resources together from the Data Centre Infrastructure, CDN, Change Management, Operations, and Global Network teams. Acting as the interface between these and the Applications teams we were able to devise a plan and a timeline to successfully migrate all of these functions and applications to the UK ahead of the deadline to serve notice to the data centre providers in Germany.
