  Transition Manager: Smartphone Applications

Goal

To act as a Transition Manager within a Telco's Location Based Services division and oversee the release of a number of new high profile applications from R&D through to production. Conform to best practices to increase the robustness and uptime of these applications.

Background

Our Telco client had increasing internal pressure to release more applications (both new and upgrades) more frequently. EigenForge was approached to work with their Transition team in Berlin and act as a Transition Manager for a number of Location Based Services applications.

Execution

We were assigned to a number of Applications development teams to track their progress and work with them on reaching their goal of timely release. Prior to release there were a number of items to check were in place:

  • QA tests performed and passed. Where errors were encountered they needed to be fully diagnosed and the root cause understood

  • Request For Change submitted to Change Management and scheduled for discussion with the Change Advisory Board where appropriate

  • appropriate system and application level monitoring

  • documentation for the Operations teams (tiers 1,2 and 3)

  • legal requirements agreed and signed with partners for Premium Services
In the case of new applications releases there were requirements for extra servers, or funtionality (high availability database servers). In one case we had to oversee the instigation of dedicated fiber from the US Mid West to Europe by working with the global network design team, a database engineer, and a solution architect.

It was a common theme to work with remote teams in Central and South East Europe, Singapore, US East and West Coasts, and the UK.

We acted as a central point of communication between the various stakeholders: engineers, application team heads, head of transition, head of operations, director of services
